Thinking about adopting a cat? Ask yourself these 5 questions

Thinking about adopting a cat? Ask yourself these 5 questions

Many people think that adopting a cat or kitten will be all fun and games. Yet, we forget to think about the cost of taking care of them. Here are some simple questions that will help you decide if you are ready for owning a pet kitty.

Can I afford a cat right now?
It is important to ask yourself if you can afford to provide for another living and breathing being. Cats are like people: they need love, attention, food to eat and a roof over their head.

Budgeting money is scary, but you need to if you want to provide a comfortable home for your future furry friend.

In 2016, the Department of Statistics Malaysia recorded household incomes and expenditures. Between 2014 and 2016, there was a 6.6% increase in the average household income. Additionally, in that time there was also a 0.2% decrease in poverty.

The study recorded the monthly consumption of household expenses as:

Once you have assessed your personal cost of living, have a look at how much of your income you have left over.

Can I afford to have an emergency fund for my cat?
Like humans, cats can get sick, injured or have another reason to take a trip to the vet. Having an emergency fund for your cat will definitely help in those tough situations.

6 months is enough time to set aside money for your pet. This step is essential to help you prepare for any unprecedented, out-of-pocket expenses.

What is the adoption fee?
The adoption fee is another area people tend to neglect when looking to adopt an animal from a shelter.

PAWS outlines the smallest amount you can donate when adopting from their shelter.

This fee goes to the volunteers who provide food, water and shelter for the animals. It’ll also cover vaccinations to make sure your kitty is ready for their forever home.

What do I feed my cat?
It is important to be observant in the first few weeks with your cat. Have a simple checklist:

  • What are their habits?
  • What kind of food do they like?
  • Fresh food
  • Canned food
  • Cooked meat
  • Raw meat
  • Are they allergic to any ingredients?

It is wise to not spend too much on food, especially if the food is expensive. It may be the cheaper options that your cat prefers.
At the end of the day, nutrition is all that matters.

Can I afford other cat accessories and services?
The litterbox is something which requires a regular change of cat litter. You can find cat litter at most pet supply stores including Lazada and Perromart.

A scratching post for your cat will also save your couches, tables and any furniture that can be ruined by cat claws.

Decide if you want to want to buy grooming tools or send your pet to the groomers. If you choose to groom your cat yourself, you will need to buy the tools or set aside money for the grooming services.

Additionally, it is wise to consider spaying or neuter your cat because they breed early. More kittens = more expenses.

The importance of financial planning for future goals.
While you’re spending for your new companion, don’t forget about your future goals. This may include:

  • Buying a house
  • Going on vacations or
  • Achieving a certain amount in your bank account

This is where financial planning can be especially beneficial.
With the added responsibility of a pet, you may have to sacrifice some goals. But if you get advice early, you may be able to compromise and learn about strategic spending.
